The Health Care Emergency Guarantee Act (HCEGA) - what we need now!

Rep. Pramila Jayapal has introduced H.R. 6906 and Sen. Bernie Sanders has introduced the companion S. 3790 in the Senate. These bills are the Health Care Emergency Guarantee Act, and would eliminate any financial barriers to health care during the pandemic. We have gotten Sen. Merkley and Reps. Bonamici, DeFazio, and Blumenauer to be cosponsors.

Perhaps the most important action for Oregon advocates to take at this point is to contact Speaker Pelosi and those in the Oregon Congressional delegation who are not yet sponsors of the HCEGA. See more about why we should support this here.

A phone call is best. Contacting through email is useful. Let them know that you support the proposed Health Care Emergency Guarantee Act. You can give one or more quick reasons why you want them to support it, a personal reason or perhaps choose from below:

  • The health of my community members affects my health. We all need to be able to get necessary care.

  • Only the federal government has the capacity and authority to meet the needs of our people during this health care and economic crisis.

  • Self-rationing due to out-of-pocket costs leads to too many not getting care from which they and their communities could benefit.

  • The millions of low wage essential workers with poor quality insurance, or none at all, (including home care and nursing home workers, grocery workers, delivery drivers, and farm workers) need coverage now to protect their health and the health of those they serve.

  • Importantly, Congress needs to supply financial support to many health care providers if they are to survive (especially hospitals in rural areas), and the HCEGA will supply that support as they provide health care - which is better than supporting them as they do not provide health care.
